Being Jamie (Jamie Baker #1)
Being Jamie Baker by Kelly OramMy rating: 3 of 5 stars

There are several things I love and female superheroes is one of them. So when I saw this book, I thought "why not?"
Firstly, the writing wasn't bad. I am a sucker for articulate teenagers so I give that one reluctant thumbs up. However, Jamie Baker is really annoying. Like really annoying.
Yes, there was tragedy in her life which made her hate her powers (as is a trope in most superhero narratives) and I am mildly sympathetic to that (omg Zoe psychopath much?) but she had such huge chip on her shoulder. For someone who hated her powers, she didn't let us forget about them at all. Like at all. Like we were reminded a lot.
I liked Ryan though, because he brought some humor and encouragement which seemed necessary for the main character but at the same time I don't like how his stalker-ish tendencies and general inability to stay the frick away was pretty much brushed aside. I mean by chapter nine she was already dreaming about him....bleh. Not to mention the fact that her parents were pretty much ready to sell her to him for a handful of magic beans if it meant she would get a boyfriend.
I mean, who wouldn't be cool five minutes later with the guy who found out your daughter has powers dangerous enough to make you move away? This kind of apparent chill baffles me. And how gullible were the witnesses in this story? Very, very gullible. That's all I'll say.
All in all, the writing was decent and the plot had potential. However I can only suspend my disbelief for so long.
